How Hard Is the Wild South Tour in Mauritius? (Fitness, Footwear and What to Expect)

The question we get most before someone books the Wild South Tour is: "Is it going to be too hard for me?" It is a fair thing to ask. This is the original Wild South Tour, run by Mauritius Tours (formerly Mauritius Adventours), and it has a cave, a coastal hike, waterfalls and a rockpool with ocean waves crashing behind it. That sounds dramatic, and it is. It is also more doable than most people expect.

Here is an honest answer, so you can decide before you book.

The Short Answer

The hike is short, but the terrain is technical. The hiking section takes around 45 minutes, though it depends entirely on your fitness level. The full tour runs 8 to 10 hours, depending on how much you are enjoying your day, and that time includes swimming, lunch and plenty of stops.

If you are reasonably active, comfortable getting your feet wet and happy to scramble over rocks, you will be fine. You do not need to be a hiker. And if hiking is not possible for you, we have an easy version of the tour (more on that below).

What the Terrain Is Really Like

This is not a groomed track. The hike follows the wild south coast, which is exactly why you see places most visitors never reach. On the way you will:

  • Climb a ladder
  • Walk over uneven rocks
  • Cross a stream
  • Descend a slope

None of it is extreme, but it does need steady feet and a willingness to use your hands now and then.

Here is how the day flows:

  • Cave exploration: Weather permitting, we guide you into a secret coastal cave where you can see the power of the Indian Ocean up close.
  • Short coast hike: A rugged clifftop trail with sweeping views. This is the main walking section of the day.
  • Crystal rockpool: A calm volcanic rockpool with waves crashing in the background. You can swim here.
  • Waterfall visit: A waterfall and a natural pool for a refreshing dip.
  • Secret beach: A quiet stretch of sand and clear water, away from the crowds.
  • Lunch: Included in the tour.

Pro Tip: Think of it as a swim and explore day with a short, technical hike in the middle. Most of your time is spent stopping, swimming and taking it all in.

Who the Wild South Tour Suits

It works well for:

  • Couples, friends and solo travellers looking for something more adventurous than a standard sightseeing tour
  • Families with children (see the FAQs below for ages)
  • Active travellers who want to see the wild side of Mauritius without a full-day mountain hike
  • Anyone who likes swimming and does not mind a bit of scrambling

The hiking version is not suitable for:

  • Travellers with vertigo or a fear of heights
  • Travellers with mobility limitations or balance difficulties
  • Travellers with recent surgeries or injuries (ankle, knee, hip, back or spine)
  • Pregnant travellers

We list these because the coastal terrain is uneven.

Can't Hike? Try the Easy Version

We offer an easy version of the Wild South Tour for travellers who cannot do the hike. We swap the hike to the rockpool for an easy waterfall walk, so you still get a day in the wild south without the technical terrain.

Pro Tip: If you are travelling with someone who cannot hike, the easy version lets you stay on the same tour and see the south together.

What to Wear and Bring

Footwear matters more than fitness. The most common problem on this tour is the wrong shoes, not tired legs.

  • Sturdy hiking or trail shoes with good grip for the coastal hike
  • Water shoes for the rockpool and waterfalls (recommended)
  • Swimwear and a towel
  • A change of clothes if you plan to swim
  • Water and sun protection

Pro Tip: Wear your swimwear under your clothes from the start. It saves time and you will be in the water more than once.

What If the Weather Is Bad?

Safety comes first, and we adjust. The cave visit depends on the weather and sea conditions. Tours can also be rescheduled if conditions are not safe. That is not a bad-weather backup plan. It is how we make sure the day is worth it.

How Many People Will Be There?

Small groups, always. The tour takes up to 6 people, with a client-to-guide ratio averaging 6:1. Your guide is with you from start to finish, and is first-aid certified.

You can choose between two options:

  • Group Wild South Tour: A small shared group, ideal for solo travellers, couples and friends. A minimum of two travellers is needed to run the tour. If you are travelling solo, we may move you to another date so you can join a shared group.
  • Premium Private Wild South Tour: Fully private and led by one of our co-founders, Jenny or Jay. The timing and itinerary are adapted to your interests, your fitness level and the conditions on the day. This is the best option if you are nervous about the terrain, travelling with a mixed-ability group or want a slower pace.

Pro Tip: Tell us about any concerns when you book. Your guide can adjust the pace and support you where needed, but only if they know in advance.

Wild South Tour FAQs

How long is the tour? Between 8 and 10 hours, depending on how much you are enjoying your day. That covers the cave (weather permitting), the coastal hike, the rockpool, the waterfall, the secret beach and lunch, with time to swim and rest between stops. The hike itself is around 45 minutes, depending on your fitness level. If you would like transport from your hotel, you can add it when you book.

Is this hike possible with children? Yes. Children aged 7 and above walk the trail themselves, and most love the rockpool and secret beach. We provide backpacks for toddlers, and children 6 and under can be carried in a backpack.

I have mobility issues. Can I still join? The hiking version has a ladder, uneven rocks, a stream crossing and a slope to descend, so it is not suitable for mobility limitations or balance difficulties, or for recent ankle, knee, hip, back or spinal injuries. If you cannot hike, choose our easy version, which swaps the hike to the rockpool for an easy waterfall walk. Please tell us about your mobility before you book so we can advise you properly.

Is lunch included? Yes. Lunch is included in the price, and your guide is with you the whole day. If you have dietary requirements, let us know when you book.
